London’s strangest street names

Jake Leff

--

London does a lot of things badly.

But one thing is does really well is strange street names.

There are literally dozens of them. But here’s a handful of the most bizarre.

Pudding Lane

Pudding Lane, a name that may conjure up images of delightful desserts and sweet treats.

However, this street holds a darker historical significance. It was on Pudding Lane in 1666 that the Great Fire of London famously broke out, consuming much of the city and leaving a lasting impact on its architecture and urban development.

Cock Lane (don’t laugh)

Moving on, we encounter Cock Lane, a name that raises a few eyebrows and sparks the imagination.

This peculiar street name has its roots in an intriguing story. In the 18th century, Cock Lane became the center of a scandalous ghost story.

The tale involved a supposed haunting and the mysterious spirit of a deceased girl. The events surrounding Cock Lane were widely publicised, leading to much speculation and debate.

Threadneedle Street

Next on our list is Threadneedle Street, a name that sounds more like a sewing supply store than a bustling London thoroughfare.
